Having everybody vote on what's best hasn't turned out as hoped.
The practice seems commendably open, democratic, and market-driven, but... -- It's proven susceptible to manipulation and gaming the system. -- items that are already popular can have too much of an "attention advantage" over new items. -- Even in the best of circumstances, not all users/voters have equally good taste. -- Attention tends to end up focused on material that meets mass tastes. -- The natural sweet spot of independent content sites is something other than
mass tastes.
