The practice seems commendably open, democratic, and market-driven, but...
-- It's proven susceptible to manipulation and gaming the system.
-- items that are already popular can have too much of an "attention advantage" over new items.
-- Even in the best of circumstances, not all users/voters have equally good taste.
-- Attention tends to end up focused on material that meets mass tastes.
-- The natural sweet spot of independent content sites is something other than
    mass tastes.
