Social networking takes some necessary first steps...
--  It acknowledges the value of human recommendations in filtering what people see.
--  It recognizes that not everybody's recommendations are equally valued.
--  It facilitates recommendations from a naturally trusted source (users' friends ).
...But its presentation techniques limit the recommendations' usefulness
--  You don't see "likes" at the time you're actively looking for something.
--  They're not easy to find after they've been made.
